Disability Awareness Program

Since its inception in 1996, the Phoenix Sister Cities Disabilities Awareness Committee (DAC) has been working towards improving awareness in the city of Phoenix and  its member Sister Cities. By developing a variety of inter-community programs incorporating those individuals with disabilities into already existing programs, or creation of new programs, PSC/DAC has been nationally recognized as a leader in the disability arena.

In partnership with the Hermosillo Committee, a wheelchair basketball exchange and disability awareness program was conducted. The City of Hermosillo sent a ten-member team that participated in several games against the Phoenix Wheelchair Suns. A highlight of their visit was an exhibition game played at the half time of the Phoenix Suns/Denver Nuggets game at America West Arena. As part of this project, Hermosillo sent a team of rehabilitation specialists and therapists who attended workshops on clinical issues related to disabilities and an exposition on adaptive recreation. Good Samaritan Hospital and Barrow Neurological Institute conducted the workshops. Another feature of the exchange was a symposium on accessibility organized by the Smith Group Architectural Group attended by five Hermosillo architects.
