Calgary is the largest city in the Province of Alberta, and the third largest municipality in Canada. The city is located in the south Grassland region of Alberta, approximately 50 miles east of the front ranges of the Rockies. It is also host to the annual Calgary Stampede, the world’s richest tournament-style Rodeo.
Catania is located on the eastern coast of Sicily in Italy and is the second largest city in Sicily. It is located at the foot of the biggest volcano in Europe, Mount Etna. Catania is a major transport hub, university center and economic hub in the area and is known for its active nightlife and vibrant culture.
Chengdu has been an important business center since trade on the Silk Road began more than 2,000 years ago. As the capital of China’s Sichuan Province, Chengdu is a city of more than ten million people. Also known as the Panda Capital, Chengdu is thought by some to be the oldest established city in the world.
Ennis, with a population of more than 32,000, is situated on the banks of the River Fergus. Ennis takes its name from Inis, the Irish word for island, and was founded in the 1300s. It is the capital of County Clare in the west of Ireland and the center of administration and commerce for the county.
Grenoble, located on the Isère River at the foot of the Alps, is a major scientific center of Europe. Known for research in physics, computer science, and applied mathematics, it has a population of over 150,000 people. Apart from its image as the hydroelectric center of France, Grenoble has many architectural wonders.
Hermosillo was the first to become a Sister City of Phoenix in 1976. It is the capital of the state of Sonora, which borders Arizona. It was recently featured on ArchDaily, the world’s most visited architecture website, for it’s Parque La Ruina, a large modern industrial social space with green areas, food stalls, and outdoor entertainment.
Himeji was the second city to be formally recognized as a Phoenix Sister City in 1976. It is known as the home of the Himeji Castle, widely considered the most beautiful castle in Japan. The city is located along the Seto Inland Sea some 40 miles west of Kobe, which is the capital of Hyogo Prefecture. A day trip from Osaka, Himeji has a diverse food, shopping and entertainment scene.
Prague and the City of Phoenix established a Capital Cities relationship in May of 1991. An incredible history spanning more than 2,000 years, modern day Prague is known for its collection of incredible architecture from various periods.
Ramat-Gan, located in west central Israel, east of Tel Aviv, is an important industrial center with a population of almost 150,000 people. Apart from being well-known for its diamond exchange, the city also is home to Israel’s largest sports stadium, Ramat Gan Stadium.
Taipei has both a rich culture and a strong economy. With a population of more than 21 million, Taipei is a major producer of high-tech components and also imports consumer goods, services, and luxury goods. They have a lively street-food scene with many night markets, including the expansive Shilin market.
